Rebecca Faith Mitchell was born in Aberdare, South Wales. She was brought up surrounded by music and was taught to play the piano from the age of two. Following many musical achievements whilst at school, Rebecca went on to study music at Cardiff University, graduating in 2007 with a BMus degree and obtaining a Masters degree in Music Composition the following year. Whilst at Cardiff she studied with Prof. Anthony Powers and Dr. Arlene Sierra, writing pieces for solo instruments, various ensembles and completing her large scale orchestral work Paths of Perception. She also participated in workshops with ensembles such as the BBC Now and Gemini. Rebecca is now a freelance composer and is currently writing and promoting her new music. Her passion is to write music that crosses the boundaries between genres and appeals to classical and non classical music lovers alike. In 2010 Rebecca was commissioned by the piano and flute duo Tranquillo to compose and arrange their debut album ‘Tranquillo Christmas’. The music was performed in venues such as the Wales Millennium Centre and St. David’s Hall Cardiff and attracted reviews from the British Flute Society and The Musicians Union. She continues to work closely with them. Rebecca also gives piano tuition and teaches music theory at Hebron Piano School. Being keen to combine both her teaching and composition skills, she writes new contemporary educational piano music. Her work has been described as ‘informative, inspirational and stimulating for young pianists’ (Valerie Childs L.R.A.M, A.R.C.M).
